Oleg Ryabets
Oleg Ryabets

Oleg Ryabets was born in Kiev, Ukraine in 1967 and studied voice at Kiev State Conservatory, and then the Moscow State Academy of Music, graduating in 1994. His teachers have included Claudia Radchenko and Zara Dolukhanova. As these recordings illustrate, Mr. Ryabets possesses an extraordinary soprano voice (up to a high c), which he has used to great acclaim in such roles as Amour in Gluck's Orpheus (St. Petersburg, 1993), the soprano in Pergolesi's Stabat Mater (Moscow & Prague, 1992-93), Irina in the premier of Trois Soeurs by P.Eötvös (Lyon, 1998), and the role of Count Myshkin in Vladimir Kobekins' The Idiot - created especially for him. Mr. Ryabets has given numerous recitals in Moscow and St. Petersburg, including one for a rare visit by Queen Elizabeth II, as well as in London, Vienna, and elsewhere. Mr. Ryabets insists he is a not a contratenor, but rather a sopranist - and perhaps the only one of in the world. At the rate at which he is dazzling audiences, he will soon be commanding those prestigious operatic roles by Handel, Scarlatti, and Mozart written originally for castrati. Oleg Ryabets is clearly an operatic sensation in the making!

Reviews

"His singing voice is hard to describe. It has an androgynous quality, as if the most mature, expressive boy chorister had soared up and up, faultlessly into the coloratura ledger-lines."
The Sunday Telegraph (London)
